Topic: Voting to Ban the Injury, Killing, & Breeding of Animals in Oregon
Speaker: David Michelson
Description: In every state and country with animal cruelty laws on the books, you will find that such laws are intentionally written to avoid criminalizing activities that exploit animals in ways society has deemed acceptable. Killing the dog or cat you live with would be considered animal abuse, but not killing a chicken on a farm, a monkey in a lab, or a deer out in the wild. A 2026 ballot initiative in Oregon seeks to propose removing these exemptions—which would in effect ban slaughter, hunting, fishing, experimentation, forced breeding, and many other forms of intentional injury against animals. The initiative, known as both Initiative Petition 28 (IP28) and the PEACE act, has collected over 50,000 signatures so far and has until July of 2026 to collect the rest needed to qualify for the ballot. During this Livestream David Michelson, one of the chief petitioners for the initiative, will share the theory of change behind the initiative and ways one can support the campaign.
