Regardless of who took the decison, Cape Nature issued the permit for the killing of Bolo. There was an opportunity to stand and say the City does not agree with the decision to kill Bolo, however that has passed. Cape Nature is a public institution with the statutory responsibility for biodiversity conservation in the Western Cape. It is governed by the Western Cape Nature Conservation Board Act 15 of 1998, and mandated to promote and ensure nature conservation. The overseeing Government Body is the Dept. of Environmental Affairs which means that there could, and should, have been intervention to stop the killing of Bolo. We are all well aware that CN has no interest in individual animals, and all the more reason oversight should have been in place.
