For the second year in a row, the Los Angeles Zoo makes the top spot as the #1 worst zoo for elephants. The increasingly dire situation for Billy and Tina is the reason. How many years does Billy have to bang his head on the barn door from the utter frustration of living in an impoverished and tiny enclosure, not even 1% of his home range in Asia? How much longer does Tina have to bob and sway, a sign of her stress and dismay at losing her mates, Jewel and Shaunzi? Billy and Tina both have zoo-related diseases and conditions, including pronounced zoochotic behaviour, the product of long life in a zoo. Every day, year after year, they walk on hard ground that injures their feet and joints, with no ability to forage in their barren 1-acre yard, choose their mates or experience any semblance of life as a real elephant.
