SUMMARY:Billy & Tina's ZOO PROTEST
DTSTAMP:20260404T160036Z

DESCRIPTION:Next protest at the LA Zoo! The Zoo opens on Easter so we will
be there! \nSUNDAY\, April 5 from 10 to 12 noon. \nPictured are Jewel and
Tina - two of the betrayed elephants once at the Los Angeles Zoo. Born in
the wilds of Asia\, both were captured at the age of one - still breast f
eeding babies - winding up forced to do circus tricks in the US. Tina's ch
ildhood story is told in A Life in Chains. \nEventually their paths crosse
d and they bonded in their misery. One of the final stages of their sorry
existences occurred in 2009 when the USDA\, charging lack of permits and m
istreatment\, confiscated Jewel and Tina from a barn in Texas owned by Wil
lie Davenport\, a private circus operator. The emaciated Jewel and Tina we
re sent to San Diego Zoo and then loaned to the LA Zoo. A third elephant\,
Boo was left in behind with Davenport! She is documented as finally being
released from captivity through death at the San Diego Zoo in 2013. She n
ever knew freedom. And neither did Jewel who was unalived at the LA Zoo in
2023. \nAll elephants in the US live pitiful lives. Whether taken from th
e wild or bred in captivity\, these intellectually complex and highly soci
al beings have their agency stolen. They become mere commodities in entert
ainment industries. Whether forced into the cruelty of circus life or the
relentless boredom of zoo life\, they are made to live in unnatural ways d
evastating to their mental and physical health. They are often transfered
from place to place\, ripped from families and friends\, severing any bond
s they've made. Their very souls are crushed. The fortunates ones end up
in the relative freedom and haven of sanctuary. \nOne way to stop these tr
agedies\, to stop elephants being used by human purposes altogether\, is f
or municipalities and states to make elephant captivity illegal. Their cap
tivity in many places including California is already heavily restricted a
nd mostly illegal. We are asking that Los Angeles extend this restriction
to zoos. \nJoin us in our final campaign - for no more elephants at the Lo
	s Angeles Zoo. \nSUNDAY\, April 5 from 10 to 12 noon / LA Zoo / 5333 Zoo D
	rive / Free parking. \n\n\n \n \n
